El Portal posts 105 degree F Sunday high

Capping a weekend of record heat, El Portal posted a whopping 105 degree F temperature at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The National Weather Service does not track temperatures at the site, but the number is likely a record for June 17.

NWS certified record temps for Sunday included Fresno (109 degrees), Merced (107 degrees) and Madera (107 degrees).

According to Mariposa's own Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) at the CAL FIRE station on Highway 49 North, the Sunday high reached only 99 degrees. The Cathey's Valley RAWS posted 101 degrees at 4 p.m.

The National Weather Service is calling for cooler temperatures across Central California this week. Highs will hit the high 90s on Wednesday and Thursday, however, before settling in the mid 80s for the weekend.
