Mary Jane Bates

Mary Jane Lozier-Bates was born on Jan. 9, 1929, to George and Edith Lozier of Mt. Bullion. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 29.

Mary was a graduate of Mariposa County High School and a life-long resident in Mariposa. Mary Jane met Leslie Bates, and the two were married Feb. 3, 1948. Les and Mary had a caring, loving, and nurturing relationship for 63 years.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Gene Lozier and Richard Lozier; sister, Ellen Plopper; as well as her daughter, Janet Evans; and her son-in-law, Gene Evans.

She is survived by her husband Les Bates, brother Lowell Lozier of Fremont, daughter Judy and sonin law Dennis Sheets of Mariposa, and daughter Susan and son-in-law Glenn Smith of Merced. In addition she leaves behind seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.

Mary was a homemaker with many talents and interests. She loved crafting, fishing, gambling trips, gardening, volunteering, but above and beyond all, Mary Jane loved family and friends. She was always the first to lend a helping hand or welcome someone with a warm smile.

A memorial service will be held at the Mariposa Funeral Home on Saturday, June 9 at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at the Mariposa Senior Center. Burial will be private. In loving memory of Mary Jane, donations may be made to the Mariposa Senior Center or the Mariposa Museum and History Center in her honor.
