Town is decked out for Flag Day

Mariposa's Carissa Leonard was among the volunteers placing American flags along Highway 140 in town on Thursday morning.

Leonard has helped post the flags every June 14 for years, since she was a local Girl Scout, she said. Her grandmother, Juanita Vegely, has worked with Girl Scouts for decades, and introduced her to the organization.

Donations from local businesses for the flags help fund local Girl Scout troops in Mariposa County, Vegely said. Volunteers put up a total of 72 flags in town.

Flag Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated each June 14. The holiday was first proclaimed in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson.

The holiday commemorates the adoption of the American flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
