Gaines fire grows to 450 acres

The Gaines Fire which is burning in northwestern Mariposa County has grown to 450 acres according to the latest CAL FIRE update. Batallion Chief Matt Watson said the fire was 20 percent contained at 5:20 p.m. Structures remain threatened, and two homes have been evacuated by Mariposa County Sheriff's officers. There are now some 18 CAL FIRE engines, three helicopters, five air tankers, one air attack and six dozers working on suppression with seven CAL FIRE crews. Mariposa County Fire has committed four engines, two water tenders and two chief officers to the effort. Merced County also has two engines at the fire. Old Toll Road at Hornitos Road and Old Toll at Pendola Gardens Road are closed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
