Evacuations lifted but fire still burns

Jill Ballinger/GAZETTE EDITOR

The evacuations caused by the Gaines Fire have been lifted, but the fire has scorched 1,667 acres. According to CAL FIRE Batallion Chief Matt Watson, the fire is 50 percent contained. It started yesterday around 12:45 p.m. off Hornitos and Old Toll Road. Structures are no longer threatened, and all road closures have been lifted. The cause of the fire has been determined to be a bird flying into a power line.
