Fire destroys 5th Street in downtown Mariposa

Blaze has not jumped across Fifth Street

Although a number of questions on the Gazette's Facebook page are asking if the fire has crossed Fifth Street to the Gold Coin and other buildings, the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office has just confirmed that the blaze is being contained to just the one block along Fifth Street to Mariposa Creek.

At this time, a number of the building in downtown Mariposa remain evacuated. Several engine and dozens of firefighters are attacking the blaze. Resources from Madera and Merced Counties have been summoned to the fire as the entire downtown area remains threatened.

The fire continues to be out of control and Highway 140 has been closed for quite some time as fire companies battle the raging blaze. Updates will be posted as they are available.
