Town pool readies for May opening

Temperatures are expected to climb into the 80s this weekend, but it will take several weeks for the local pool to catch up, said April Hawley of Mariposa County Parks and Recreation.

This week, pool staff were aiming for a May 7 opening date. "We usually open the first week of May," Hawley said on April 19. "We're running a little behind because we've been lacking sunshine to warm it up."

Until this week, that is. According to the National Weather Service, town temperatures are expected to climb into the 80s for the first time this year on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday, however, the town pool's water temperature stood at 65 degrees F. Most swimmers would consider that a bit nippy.

The pool has a solar heating system, but it also relies on ambient air temperature for the annual warmup. If clouds return, the pool's opening day could be pushed back to Monday, May 14.

When open, weekday lap swims are held from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the pool.

Pool opening information will be posted on the county pool Web page. The address is http://www.mariposacounty.org/index.aspx?NID=1200
