Grading for second Habitat for Humanity home begins

Habitat for Humanity of Mariposa County graded a hillside site near John C. Fremont Hospital this week where volunteers will start building a second home later this year.

The site grading is the first step on the road to completing the charity's second home for a low-income "partner family."

The home site is located on Mueller Court, in the hospital neighborhood.

Mariposa Habitat's Tour de Habitat bicycle-themed fundraiser in February brought in close to $10,000 to acquire land for the new home and start construction.

A partner family for the home has not yet been selected. Mariposa Habitat's Web site provides the following information about qualifications for partner families.

"Habitat families must have lived in Mariposa County for one year before applying for a home. The criteria used in family selection include 1) need for safe, decent, affordable housing; 2) willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity by putting in “sweat equity” on the home, taking homeowner training classes, and helping to promote Habitat’s mission; and 3) ability to pay off a no-interest mortgage loan over 15 to 30 years. Applicants’ income must be in the 30-60% range of the median income for our county."
