Drought designation for county is possible

The decision will be made by county agriculture commissioner Cathi Boze pending the results of local measurements to be made by U.S. Department of Agriculture technicians over the coming weeks.

"We're waiting to see what the rains do," Boze said. The USDA staffers also "will take clippings of forage to determine the production per acre."

Both will figure into the county's decision on whether to declare a drought.

An official drought designation opens the door to emergency loans for affected ranchers, Boze said.
