Watch out Olympians: Rice is sliding that way

For one Mariposa girl, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Mackenzie Rice spent her winter in Park City, Utah. She wasn’t vacationing. She wasn’t visiting family. She was training for her ultimate goal.

That goal: “The Olympics,” she said matter-of-factly last week. Rice is a “slider.” She races on the National Development Team for the luge. She started on the club team, and the Development Team coaches selected her to compete at that level.

Rice picked up the sport from her mom, Margot Wholey. She started sliding at age 10. “I did it. I liked it. It’s awesome.”
