Tree crashes into Calaveras Co. house, kills girl

ARNOLD, Calif. (AP) — Officials in Calaveras County say a 100-foot-tall tree fell onto a house, killing an 8-year-old girl who was sleeping inside.

The Record of Stockton reports (http://bit.ly/xO9Tqi ) that the incident happened in the town of Arnold shortly before 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Fire officials say the storm-weakened fir tree, which was 2 to 3 feet in diameter, toppled after being uprooted by a nearby creek. It crashed through the roof of the single-story house and landed in the child's bedroom.

Ebbetts Pass Battalion Chief Ron Getter says firefighters took 20 minutes to get to the scene because they had to maneuver through 6 inches of unplowed snow.

The girl's name was not immediately released.
