Spring tomatoes arrive in town

It's too early to plant outdoors, but tomatoes and other spring vegetables are newly arrived in Mariposa this week.

The vegetable seedlings are on sale at Mariposa Feed & Supply on Highway 140 near the north end of town.

Early Girl, Celebrity and Large Red Cherry tomatoes are among the varieties on sale. Japanese eggplant and Golden Bell peppers are also available. Another sign of spring is also arrived at the business--spring chicks.

Early birds should restrain their planting instincts, however.

"It's too early to plant tomatoes outside," store employee Tom Ritter said. "We stock them because some people like to plant them in greenhouses for an early start. Soil conditions and weather certainly don't warrent putting them out."

The average last frost date for Mariposa (zip code 95338) is April 19, according to the National Climatic Data Center.
