Snowboarding accident claims Stanners

Jill Ballinger

A tragic snowboarding accident at China Peak on Sunday claimed the life of Kynan Stanners, 30, a 1999 graduate of Mariposa County High School and CAL FIRE firefighter.

Fresno County Deputy Coroner Kelly Wiefel confirmed Stanners' identity just moments ago. She said his death appears to "nothing but a tragic accident." She said his fiancé was with him and had reported him missing, but another skier found him shortly thereafter.

Resort officials said on Sunday that Stanners had been riding alone on one of the slopes when he fell head-first into deep snow and suffocated. Deputy Wiefel said her office was conducting an autopsy today.

Stanners was a popular and involved student at MCHS. He played football, basketball, golf and baseball and was named homecoming king as a senior. He was currently living in the Bass Lake area.
