Rapist gets 25 to life

Gazette Exclusive

Jimmy L. Leonard will not see the world outside of prison bars for at least the next 25 years. When he is eligible for parole, he will be 72 years old.

His victim, however, likely faces a lifetime of fear and anxiety, factors she told the court she now faces every day--and has since she was assaulted in her home more than eight months ago.

Leonard was formally sentenced on Tuesday afternoon in a brief hearing in Mariposa County Superior Court. During that hearing, he reiterated his no contest pleas to three felony sexual assault counts and one felony robbery with the intent to commit sexual assault.

Leonard was arrested on Aug. 2, after the 23-year-old mother of two reported that an unknown man had entered her apartment, bound her and sexually assaulted her.

On Tuesday, it was her turn to have a say in the matter.

For the full story on the hearing, see this week's Mariposa Gazette.
