High-country snow, heavy rain expected

The Yosemite region high country will see between two and three feet of fresh snow between Friday and Saturday afternoons, the National Weather Service said on Thursday.

Rain is expected across the lower elevations, with the snow level falling as low as 2,000 feet on Saturday night. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect above 6,000 feet from Friday afternoon through Saturday.

Motorists in the Yosemite area are advised to carry chains. Southwest winds gusting to 50 mph may cause drifting of snow and possible whiteout conditions.

Skiers and boarders thinking of trying the slopes at Yosemite's Badger Pass this weekend are advised to check the Park's road conditions hotline before heading to the area.

The number is 372-0200. Callers should then hit 1, then another 1 to get the roads report.

Badger Pass is likely to remain open through Sunday, April 1, depending on snow conditions.
