Congressman Denham Announces 2012 19th Congressional District Annual Art Competition

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jeff Denham announced the start of California’s 19th District Congressional Art Competition.   Aspiring artists in the 19th District will have the opportunity to display their talent in this year’s contest, and one district winner will be invited to share their artwork with the rest of the nation in the U.S. Capitol.

The Congressional Art Competition provides high school students with the opportunity to showcase their artwork throughout their districts, as well as the chance to receive national recognition for their hard work and creativity. Each year, every Member of Congress is invited to choose one grand prize entry from his or her district to send to Washington, D.C.  Since its creation in 1982, more than 650,000 students have participated in the competition nationwide.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a wonderful way for the students of California’s 19th Congressional District to share their talents and a piece of our community with the rest of the nation,” said Congressman Denham.  “I invite all interested students to submit their entries to this year’s competition, and I look forward to seeing the creativity the young artists of our district have to offer.”

The winning student and one guest will be invited to an awards ceremony hosted on Capitol Hill during the summer of 2012.  The awards reception brings together all of the winning artists in the official unveiling of their artwork and traditionally features a celebrity guest.  Every district winner will have their artwork displayed in the national exhibition located in the Cannon Tunnel of the United States Capitol, where thousands of visitors pass through each year.

All artwork and signed release forms must be delivered to Congressman Denham’s Fresno or Modesto offices no later than 5:00 p.m. PDT on April 4.  For directions to the Congressman’s offices, please call the Modesto Office at (209) 579-5458 or the Fresno Office at (559) 449-2490. Submitted artwork will be displayed in Modesto at a location still yet to be determined.  Artwork that does not meet all of the requirements will not be displayed.  Judging will take place prior to May 1, 2012, and a reception will be scheduled to announce the first, second, and third place winners.
