M.L. ‘Sonny’ Lawhon

On Jan. 20, the Lawhon family lost “the rock” of its family,

M.L. “Sonny” Lawhon, beloved husband, father and Papa.

Sonny was born 72 years ago to Sam and Juanita Lawhon in Madera. He was raised in Texas and Madera, joining the Navy when he was 16 to see the world.

He worked for Standard Oil many years in Madera and Merced. After leaving Standard Oil, he went to work for the Langendorf Bread Company as a route salesman. In 1969, he went to work for the U.S. Department of Interior in Yosemite National Park, retiring in January, 1997.

He was a member of the El Portal Volunteer Fire Department and served the community and school on many fundraisers. Immediately after retiring, he opened “Sonny’s Shop,” a small engine repair business. He supplied a much-needed service to the community of El Portal until June of 2011, when the door was shut due to declining health.

Sonny was preceded in death by his mother, father, two young sisters and his brother, Tom.

He is survived and greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Earlene, of El Portal; son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Tammy of Mariposa; daughter and sonin law, Cori and Chris of Fredericksburg, Tex.; daughters, Gail of Georgia, and Kay of Atascadero; grandchildren, Billy, currently serving in the US Army; Kylie of Bay City, Tex., Cameron of Fredericksburg, Tex.; Haley of Mariposa, and Christian of Fredericksburg, Tex. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

There will be no services, per his request.
