David John Marks

David John Marks made his transition on June 5 at John C. Fremont Hospital in Mariposa following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Winsted, Conn., to Andrew and Philipa (Frantelone) Marks. Preceding David in death are his brothers, Salvatore and Andrew; and sisters, Gaetonina, Jodie, Frances and Mary Rose.

David often enjoyed sharing stories about his colorful childhood as the youngest in his large family. A loving family and a year in a seminary helped to build the strength of character for which he will be best remembered.

He was a graduate of Gilbert High School, the University of Connecticut and attended the University of Hawaii while serving in the C.I.C. in the Army during World War II. He was also stationed in Japan and the Phillipines.

In 1946, he married Pauline Fitzgerald. Their three daughters and sons-in-law live in Santa Cruz and Carmel; Pam and Shev Aguilar, Patricia and Geoff Loftus, and Priscilla Marks. David’s granddaughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Scott Hae, live in Soquel. David’s granddaughters, Catherine and Erica Ann Loftus attend UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley.

Following retirement from his Marks-Clark Insurance Agency in Santa Cruz, David moved to Mariposa and in 1988, married Donna Hubbard. They were both active in the Butterfly Garden Club. David was a member of Rotary International and served on the California State Mining and Mineral Museum board and the Mariposa Library board. He and Donna enjoyed giving tours of their beautiful gardens at their Country Kitchen Herb Farm in Lushmeadows.

At David’s request, his family will hold his memorial with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Monterey Bay in July. Donations in his name to the John C. Fremont Hospital will be appreciated.
