Esther Lucille Red FitzPatrick

Lucy passed away May 13, in Arroyo Grande. She was 89 years young. She was born in Milburn, Okla. on June 20, 1921, to Robert Lee Gardner and Bunie Vista Brunk.

Lucy married Arthur Red in Sayre, OK in 1939, and soon moved to California. Together they raised three sons, Jerry, Monty and Richard in Lemoore. She relished being a housewife and their home was always open to last minute get togethers and pool parties. Art was partners in a construction business that began in Lemoore, continued in Morro Bay and Mariposa, where Lucy and Art retired in 1975. Lucy was one of three women who started the Ponderosa Basin Chapel. She was active in the Message of Life Ministries in Ahwahnee, Manna House in Mariposa and, of course, the Ponderosa Basin Chapel.

She married Ed FitzPatrick in 1986, and they enjoyed traveling, mostly on cruise ships with their favorite destination being Hawaii. Lucy was a long-time host to the chapel’s women’s bible study who were treated weekly to her flower-covered deck.

She moved to Sacramento in 2007 to be near her sister Kathryn, and in 2009 she moved to San Luis Obispo County to spend her remaining years near three of her granddaughters.

She is preceded in death by her parents, seven of eight siblings and her husband, Ed.

She is survived by her three sons: Jerry (DeAnne) of El Cajon, Monty of Mariposa, and Richard (Donna) of Hollister; her sister, Kathryn Divine of Sacramento; seven grandchildren: Jeff Red (Mandy) of Sandy, Ore., Dawn Swan (Richard) of Alpine, Cameron Botkin (Jeremy) of Townsville, Queensland, Australia, Kalee Pritchard (Craig) of Paso Robles, Leslee Pritchard (Jeff) of Morro Bay, Haylee Red (Lou) of Pismo Beach, Magdalena Red (Grant) of Denver, Colo. Lucy also leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren: Jedadiah, Elisha, Hannah, Rachel, Moriah, Sarah, Luke, Ryan, Aubry, Sean, Kay, Wyatt, Lucy, Blayne, Jake, Cody.

The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Sainsbury, Cypress Gardens and staff and Marian Hospice for their kindness and care.

A celebration of Lucy’s life will be held Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at the Ponderosa Basin Chapel. In lieu of flowers, remembrances should be sent to the Ponderosa Basin Chapel, 5611 Creel Road, Mariposa, CA 95338.
