Robert Sparks

Robert Walter Sparks, 86 and life-long resident of Mariposa, died on Monday, March 14, at the John C. Fremont Hospital of complications due to lung cancer. He was born on Aug. 10, 1924 in Madera, to the late Constance Agnes (Swinnock) Sparks of St. John’s New Brunswick, North Canada and Andrew Walter Sparks of Boonville, NC.

Robert graduated from Mariposa County High School in June of 1942. He worked the summer season in the National Park Service before joining the Armed Services. He served from 1943 to 1946. He later married Lois June Wass of Mariposa on Jan. 24, 1948. After his service he returned to Mariposa and worked driving truck for the logging mills during the logging season and as a gas delivery driver in the offseason. From 1951 to 1957, he worked for Valley Butane Supply and Van Gas. In 1957, he started his own business as Mariposa L.P. Gas Service which he owned and operated for 20 years until he retired in 1977.

Robert is survived by his wife Lois, his three sons Walter Allen, Steven Wayne, David Michael and his granddaughter, Cristina.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 25, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Mariposa.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Robert’s name to the local American Cancer Society- 1604 Ford Avenue, Modesto, CA 95350.

All funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home.
