Peter ‘Frank’ Schram

Peter “Frank” Schram passed away on Friday, Feb. 18, in Mariposa where he has been staying with family for the past seven months. He was 79.

Born Peter Frank Schram in Royal Oak, Mich. on May 13, 1931, to Fred and Wilma (Vaarberg) Schram, both from Holland, he had one sister, Dena. The family drove out to Paramount, and there they stayed until Frank was 16 years old. Then they were off to a dairy in Washington State for a few years until he graduated high school in 1949. The family moved back to Paramount, and that is where he continued to work in the dairy industry, milking cows.

He met Judith Arlene Lewark in 1955 while climbing through his car window into another car and into her lap. They were married April 13, 1957. Their son, Frankie Allen, was born in February, 1959, and their daughter, Cindy Lynn, was born in December, 1961.

After a brief stay in Raymond, Frank bought a dairy in Chowchilla in 1964, and that is where he and Judy raised their two children, watched them get married and start families of their own. He was blessed with five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Frank also served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1950 to 1956, where he advanced to airman. He loved his work on the dairy/farm, working on cars and tractors. He loved to go boating and skiing (up to age 67). He loved fishing, Nascar races, telling stories of his youth, and even took a ride, took control and “rolled” a Russian jet at age 76. His last ride was at age 78 in a B29. He loved his life and had no regrets.

Frank is survived by his children and their families, Frankie and Nora Schram, and Cindy and John Zurilgen, all of Mariposa; his grandchildren, Amanda, Carly, Aubriana, Alec and Ashlynn; greatgranddaughter, Harley; sister and brother-in-law, Dena and Steven Kukich; nieces, Stephanie and Denise; brother-in-law and wife, Russ and Twyla Lewar; and niece, Lalena.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Arlene in 1992; his parents, Foppe Eelke and Willeminia Geertruida Schram; and his in-laws, John Rusell and Betty Mae Lewark.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m. at the Chowchilla Cemetery, with a gathering at the SFA Hall, 800 South Third Street, Chowchilla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 714, Mariposa, CA 95338, or the American Cancer Society. Frank’s grandkids have been involved in Relay for Life for the past nine years, so the family would appreciate donations at www.relayforlife.org/mariposaca. Click on the team list, then “Cancer Crushin’ Kidz,” find team member Ashlynn Judith Zurilgen, and donate in Frank’s name or send donations to American Cancer Society, 4573 Yaqui Gulch Road, Mariposa, CA 95338. The Relay for Life is May 21.
