Margaret Stout Johnson Bowery

Margaret Stout Johnson Bowery was born in a log cabin in Mud Springs, Mariposa County, the third of seven children to Judge Ralph Simpson Stout and Marie Winchell Stout on on July 31, 1915.

She graduated from Mariposa County High School in 1933. Margaret was labeled a tomboy with a spirit of adventure that never left her. In 1941, she took a train alone cross country to work for the war effort in Washington D.C, later working at Yale University. In 1946, she married and moved to Chowchilla where she and her second husband, Glenn, built their home. Margaret, 95 passed peacefully at home on Jan. 16 after a brief illness. Her children Bill and Linda, grandson Brad and friends were at her side.

She was active in the community, holding court at the Coffee Cats almost daily to discuss current events with her dear friends. She was young to the end, always ready for the next adventure and in her life there were many; including motorcycle rides, flying in a MIG jet, hot air ballooning over the Arizona desert and bowling on two leagues, and this was all in her 80' and 90's. It was hard to keep up with Margaret.

Margaret will be missed by her many friends and family. She leaves behind a brother, Stan Stout, age 98; sister Barbara, age 89; son Bill and daughter Linda; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by husbands George Johnson and William L. (Glenn) Bowery; daughter, Shirley; sister, Patricia Martin; brothers, Morgan, Tom, and Doug Stout; and grandson, Shawn Michael Cook.

A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, Jan.25 at noon at Farnesi's in Chowchilla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
