Harold Menzies



Harold John Menzies died Dec. 21, at his home in Mariposa at the age of 72. He was born on Jan. 8, 1938, in Merced and lived in Mariposa his entire life. He served eight years in the California Air National Guard after graduating from Mariposa County High School in 1956. Probably best known for coowning Menzies’ Shell Station with his brother Ronald, he also worked by his side serving as a volunteer firefighter for many years. Harold was a very talented and hardworking man, keeping busy with odd jobs around town even after his retirement from the gas station after 25 years of service. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, John and Gertrude Menzies of Mariposa, and his brother Robert of Woodland. He is survived by his brother Ronald Menzies (Glenda) of Mariposa; three daughters, Robyn Porter (Ron) of Atwater; April Boswell of Stanislaus County; and Janetta Kelley of Arcata; four nephews, Robert John Menzies (Deb) of Portland, ME; Grant Hayter-Menzies (Les) of Sidney, BC; Sean Menzies of Burbank; Scott Menzies (Emily) of Eureka; and two grand-nephews, Joshua Menzies (Rhianna) of Santa Rosa, and Jeremiah Menzies of Portland, ME. A fire service bell ceremony and sounding of the town siren to honor Harold’s service to the community will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the MPUD Fire Station #1 on Highway 49 across from Smith Road in Mariposa.
