George C. McQuarrie

George C. McQuarrie Jr. died on Dec. 12, of a massive stroke. George and his wife of 69 years, Vivian, were longtime residents of Cathey’s Valley.

George was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Nov. 16, 1920. George joined the Navy when he was 17-yearsold and was a pilot most of his career. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He left the Navy in 1960 and went back to college under the G.I. bill and became a chiropractor. George practiced in Poway until 1979 when he retired and moved to Cathey’s Valley.

George and Vivian had three children: James Edward, Ellie Louise and Georgia Carol. James died in 1955 at age 16. Ellie Britt-McQuarrie has lived in Mariposa since 1978. Ellie has two children, Eric Britt of Merced and Vicki Britt-Engfer of Mariposa.

Georgia Smith lives in Cathey’s Valley, where she moved to be near family when she found out her husband Michael Smith was dying of brain cancer. Mike died Sept. 5. Georgia has one son, Tyler Farmer, of Las Cruces, NM.

George and Vivian had five great-grandchildren: Chris Britt who died in January 2010, George Britt and Clyde Britt IV of Merced; and Cassidy and Shealyn Engfer of Mariposa.

Family was the most important thing in George’s life, he moved to Cathey’s Valley to be close to his grandchildren. He was the rock of the family and was there for everyone.

He was very generous and good friend to his many friends over the years. He will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

A private memorial was held in Merced on Dec. 19.
