Parade and race winners announced
The winners of the 2010 Labor Day Parade, sponsored by the Mariposa and Golden Oaks Lions, have been announced. The parade took place on Sept. 4 in downtown Mariposa. Sunday’s Amigo de Oro race saw new records set.
The sweepstakes winner of this year’s parade was the Mariposa Miners Special Olympics team. The Butterfly Festival committee took first place in the civic floats category, and the Mariposa Democratic Committee placed second.
In the commercial floats category, Pizza Factory was the winner. Mercy Ambulance placed second. The Mariposa Miners placed first in the club floats division, with Habitat for Humanity taking second place.
Rancho Valencia of Merced took the mounted equestrian group top prize. Brittany Hart, Merced Rodeo Queen, was the winner in the equestrian single category.
First Valley Vintage Car Club won the antique car club category, with Edmond Cardoza and Dale Silverman placing first in the individual antique car division. In the comic and novelty category, the Wayward Ponies Home placed first. McKay Mullen’s modified lawn mower took second place.
In the marching groups category, the winner was Tops Club. Julia Parker and walkers took second. The Native Daughters placed first in the decorated motor vehicle club division, and the Merced Runabouts took second.
Marshall Long and the Odd Fellows Lodge placed first in the antique drawn vehicle division. First place in equipment tractors was the US Forest Service, followed by Mariposa County Fair.
The Mariposa Veterans of Foreign Wars placed first in color guard. Mariposa Youth Football took first place in the majorettes division, with the Mariposa County High School Grizzly cheerleaders placing second.
Mariposa County High School’s Grizzly marching band won its division, and Inky’s Basement Band did the same for the entertainment category.
The 36th annual Amigo de Oro run hosted 78 runners in the 5 and 10-mile events. Runners from age 8 (Cooper Cassady) to 84 (Ralph Seely) participated in this year’s event.
New records were set in five age categories. Florence Seely set a first time record in the 80 to 89-year-old age group for the 5 mile women’s division. She finished the course in one hour, 26 minutes and 38 seconds. Mel Elliot broke a record in the men’s division of the same age category. He finished in one hour, one minute and 45 seconds. The previous record was set last year.
Anne Kelley broke the previously set record in the 50 to 59-year-old age group 10 mile women’s division. She finished in one hour, 17 minutes and 29 seconds. Eric Little took the men’s division of the same category. He finished the race in one hour, two minutes and 47 seconds. That time broke the record previously set in 1989. Dave Miller set a new record in the men’s 10-mile with a time of one hour, 15 minutes and six seconds.
Overall winners were Jenny Fouch, women’s 5- mile; Raymond Rodriguez, men’s 5-mile; Kelley, women’s 10-mile; and Little, men’s 10-mile.
