Spikers begin year in very close contests
Last week the Mariposa County High School varsity girls’ volleyball team began its season. Friday night the Lady Grizzlies downed Livingston in their home opener, but Monday fell to Summerville in three games.
Tuesday evening’s defeat at the hands of Yosemite High School was even tougher to swallow. It took the Badgers four games to send Mariposa packing.
“I think we will be very competitive in league play,” said head coach Debbie Leonard. Mariposa is the defending Southern Athletic League champ.
Thursday evening at Buhach Colony in a nonleague contest, Leonard has selected her starters from a slim roster of 10.
Chrissy Schellentrager and Jin Anderson are set at the middle blockers. Junior Brook Earling is the setter, along with sophomore Carissa Leonard.
Sophomore Hannah Evans and senior Alina Parga have established themselves as outside hitters and Calee Peracca and Trish Middleton are the opposites. Riyn Williams hits and plays the back row, and senior Haley Guenthart is the defensive specialist along the back line.
