4-H prepares for fair and a new year
It is time once again for the Mariposa County Fair and 4-H members from around the county are getting their animals ready for show, entering items from the many 4-H projects like silversmithing, vegetable crops, rockets, cooking, crafts and more. Members are anticipating what ribbon they will earn for the hard work they have done all year.
4-H members ask the community to take some time to look at all the 4-H youth projects in Building B and in the livestock area. These members have gained a great life experience which will help them as they become responsible adults. 4-H officials thank all the 4-H projects leaders for their mentorship to local youth.
New this year is a 4-H judging competition that will be held on Monday, Sept. 6 from noon to 3 p.m. in the Strathearn Pavilion.
Anyone who has a hobby or talent that he or she would like to share with youth can become a 4-H leader. Leaders need to be at least 18 years of age, go through a new leader orientation, DOJ livescan, and be approved by the county director. 4-H is just not animals. Some projects of interest for youth are welding, woodworking, GPS/GIS, hiking, biking, food preservation, automotive, or basket weaving.
4-H is fun, and it is educational. The new 4-H year in Mariposa County will begin Oct. 1. Children who would like to join a youth program with interesting projects from jewelry to meat goats, or adults who are interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer leader can come by the 4-H booth at the Mariposa County Fair or contact the 4-H office at 966-4829 for further details.
The enrollment fee is $10 per adult and $18 per youth. Enrollment deadlines are for current 4- H members, Oct. 1, and new 4-H members Nov. 1.
