Soldiers march to help Wounded Warriors
From Aug. 23 through 28, eight soldiers are conducting a 90-mile, six-day march through Yosemite National Park, to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project.
On the morning of Aug. 23, the Wawona Hotel has allowed the group to have breakfast there before starting out on the march. Family, friends, and supporters are welcome to join them at 8 a.m. for breakfast. Cost of the breakfast buffet is $15.
On Aug. 28, the soldiers will be coming down the Lower Yosemite Falls Trail, in Yosemite Valley, around 3:15 to 3:30 p.m., as they make their final march to Yosemite Village. Family, friends, and supporters are encouraged to cheer on the soldiers as they make their final one-mile trek.
These soldiers, some of whom will be deployed in November to Iraq, will be carrying the American flag during that final piece of the hike.
Soldiers taking part in the hike are SSG Ernesto Jimenez, SGT Joe Alves, SGT Bryce Battershell, SGT Chris Garcia, SGT Andrew McFerrin and PVT Damien Pennington. Battershell is a Mariposa resident who works security at the Wawona Hotel. He will be deployed for his third tour in November. Battershell has already raised $1,000 on his own.
The community is invited to come to Lower Yosemite Falls Trail, Yosemite Valley on Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. to cheer these soldiers arrival. Those who wish to support the effort can donate to Wounded Warriors Project (145K March) or just show up to cheer and support the men.
