Local DUI arrests continue to increase

It has been a busy summer for Mariposa County law enforcement in terms of dealing with drunk drivers. Since June, officers have been hauling in far more drivers under the influence than is normal.

Last week, those figures climbed again. Seven more people faced driving under the influence charges from Aug. 6 to 8. That number is just under a spike in June that netted 10 arrests in a five-day period. The week before that, six others went to jail for DUI.

Deputies booked a total of four people into the Mariposa County Jail on Aug. 6, and every one of them was on a DUI charge. The following day, two more people were arrested for the same thing. On Aug. 8, another man was arrested and charged with DUI and resisting arrest.

Those figures do not include arrests made by the California Highway Patrol. Mariposa County Sheriff Brian Muller said this year’s figures are more than double last year’s.

“I think that at least part of the increase is the result of greater awareness and enforcement by the deputies,” Muller said in July. “But I believe the greater factor is that more people are drinking and choosing to drive.”
