Kids take part in music camp

YOUNGSTERS PARTICIPATE IN THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC STUDIO’S SUMMER MUSIC CAMP. YOUNGSTERS PARTICIPATE IN THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC STUDIO’S SUMMER MUSIC CAMP. The Sounds of Music Studio is presenting its seventh annual youth summer music camp. The studio has been active in teaching the love of music to the children of Mariposa and Madera County for most of the last two decades. Cuts to public education continues to hurt local children's opportunities for a musical education. "It is more important than ever to expose and nurture music in our children whenever possible," instructor Gail Vanderslik said.

Research shows that early exposure to the arts has been proven to increase cognitive abilities, enhance self-esteem and is a vital part of a wellrounded education. With the camps, Vanderslik said, "Young children that develop the desire to play an instrument during summer camp will not be at a disadvantage when they reach middle and high school if they build on the instruction they receive."

This year, Sounds of Music is offering three camps, for children 4 to 12-years-old. "The Little Folks," is for 4 through 6-year-olds. They will take an imaginary trip each day to various places and cultures to experience the music and dance of that area. This camp takes place from July 26 to 30 from 10 a.m. to noon.

"The Little Mozart's" allows children ages 6, 7 and 8, to sample musical cultures from around the world as well hands on experience with a variety of instruments and ensemble playing. The group will meet Aug. 2 through 6, from 10 a.m. to noon.

During that same week, from 2 to 4 p.m., children 9 to 12-years-old, can be a part of

The Rhythm and Groovin" class. Participants will be instructed in playing and creating music using a variety of percussion, wind and personal instruments. Students will also be taught techniques of playing in a group, compose an original piece of music, and learn about music history.

Students in all groups will have the opportunity to learn how to read music, play melodies, learn various rhythms, movement and drama and participate in musical group activities.
