Inappropriate letter

Last week’s GAZETTE contained a letter complaining about the “local credit union.” While no names were mentioned, any customer of the “local credit union” would know who the complaint is about.

The subject of the complaint has waited on me several times in recent weeks, always politely and cheerfully. I just spoke to her about the letter you published. She was not aware of any specific customer dissatisfaction, so I wonder about a few things:

1. Is the complainer upset about an ongoing and pervasive problem, or perhaps only witnessed an isolated incident or two?

2. Did the complainer contact the local credit union (or its main office) to report his concerns?

3. Could this be a personal dispute that really doesn’t relate to service at the local credit union at all?

4. Why is the GAZETTE devoting print space to an issue that at best should have been worked out through other channels, or at worst is just a veiled personal attack?

People need to resolve conflicts without jumping into a public forum. If you have time to write a letter to the editor, you have time to write a letter to the person or business with whom you have a conflict. In a small town we can figure out who you’re talking about even if you don’t list their name. I do not feel the GAZETTE should lend itself to this sort of public humiliation.
