(Gazette Photo by Dan Tucker)Friday, July 9, 10:55 a.m.--At around 10 a.m. a vegetation fire was sparked in tall dry grass on Silva Road near the intersection with Carleton Road.

Officials at the scene reported that the fire was allegedly ignited by a riding lawn mower, the third such incident in the past couple of weeks.

The fire ripped through the vegetation, and one residence was temporarily threatened before firefighters halted the fire's advance. Initial reports indicated a surface burn of approximately five acres. Crews are currently mopping up the scene.

Look for more details on this, and other fires in the next edition of the Mariposa Gazette.

Horray for the terrific

Horray for the terrific firefighters. Let us help them some more. The Mariposa Gazette should put fire safety tips in big letters on the front page each week. Like not using lawnmowers, etc after 10 AM, having water near by, or in five gallon backpack if away from water source, using common sense! The information in yesterdays paper was good, but needed to be on front page. Have children's drawings and fire tips in the paper. Let's work on having as fire free a year as possible.
