Celebrations set for the coming holiday weekend
There is plenty to do in Mariposa County to celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend. Events are planned for Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the festivities take place in Northern Mariposa County as the Coulterville Fire Brigade hosts the 41st annual deep pit barbecue at Coulterville Park from noon to 6 p.m. The cost for dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
There will be a 50-foot water slide, relay games and a chance to win raffle tickets to spend at the prize booth. Passes for adults and children for the day are $5 each. There will be a wa- termelon eating contest, a 50/50 drawing and a chance to win one of five gift packages. At around 4 p.m., participants can enjoy part of an eight-foot banana split.
For information about the day’s events, contact Gail Tyler at 878- 3015 or Debbie Cook at 878-3227. All proceeds from the day’s events benefit local firefighters.
On Sunday, the fun moves south to Mariposa. The Mariposa Kiwanis will host the 17th annual Fourth of July celebration at the Mariposa Fairgrounds. The fun starts at noon, with free activities like waterslides, a bounce house, kids’ games and music. There will be food available for sale, and the fireworks show starts at dusk.
The cost for the fireworks show is $6 for adults, and children age 10 and under are free. Tickets are being presold and can be obtained by calling 742-5257.
The Mariposa County Arts Council’s Mariposa Evenings in the Art Park begin next weekend. On Friday, July 9, the musical season kicks off with “Majestic Fools,” followed by “Green Machine” on Saturday, July 10.
