Hall of Fame honors athletes and scholars

The Mariposa County High School Grizzly Hall of Fame will honor its inductees and scholarship winners at the foundation’s annual dinner on June 26. Included in this year’s class are Gary Preston, John Rotondo (posthumously), Mike Moore and the 1983-84 and 1984-85 Grizzly basketball teams.

Preston was a member of the class of 1962 and is being honored for his accomplishments on the baseball field. “Gary is arguably one of the top baseball players to play at MCHS during the 1950s and 60s,” Hall of Fame board member Trace DeSandres said.

Rotondo, a champion in establishing youth sports programs in Mariposa, was also the long-time director of the Mariposa County Parks and Recreation Department.

Moore graduated in 1993 and is the Grizzlies’ all-time leading scorer with over 2,000 points. He played four years of varsity basketball for the Grizzlies. He is the MCHS career scoring leader, racking up 2,031 points in 102 contests. He holds the career highest average of points per game, 19.9, a mark he established in 1993.

The basketball teams being honored were back-to-back Southern Athletic League champions. They combined to win 44 games with only eight losses in two years. Players on those teams include Vince Brown, Loren Dubberke, Ron Wagner, Aaron Matheson, Andrew Svendson, Mike Brosius, Mike Jordan, Doug Tucker, Mark Stelling, Rudy Sanchez, Jess Houtz, Robert Duran, Stephan Jay and manager Richie Lee.

They were the top ranked “A” team in the Stanislaus District, and number three ranked defensive team in the same district, and the sixth ranked offensive team.

They tied school records for the number of wins in a single single at 21, and tied the school record for number of consecutive wins at 12.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner are available from any board member, at Mariposa Feed and at the MARIPOSA GAZETTE. The filet mignon dinner will be prepared by the Mariposa Lions Club.
