THE GROUP HAD STOPPED ALONG THE ROAD TO VIEW SCENERY ON THE WAY TO YOSEMITE. GAZETTE PHOTO BY DAN TUCKER A 20- year-old El Segundo man fell to his death after slipping in a culvert near Highway 140 on April 30. Ryan Broderick was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office received the 911 call around 9:15 a.m. When the deputy arrived on scene, he could see Broderick’s body about 50 feet beneath the culvert in a rocky area. Broderick was not moving and displayed no signs of life. He appeared to have sustained head and facial injuries.

The witnesses, who were traveling with Broderick to Yosemite for the day, said they all live and work together in North Fork. The stopped along Highway 140 near the culvert to look at the scenery. The entire group went into the culvert and walked toward the end to look out.

Two of the people in the group walked toward the end and looked out toward the river canyon. Broderick and two others walked behind them. There was a small amount of water running through the large culvert.

Broderick reportedly ran past the first two playfully. He got to the end, where a concrete slab extends above the rocky area below. As Broderick ran toward the end, he was unable to straddle the water as it widened on the slab. He lost his footing and fell. His momentum carried him over the edge.

The photo is horrible I

The photo is horrible I agree, however there is something a bit more troubling than that. I have been to the culvert where the young man lost his life. The entrance is not blocked and there are no warning signs in sight. The culvert is heavily used, you can tell by the fresh spray paint and ciggarette butts. It almost acts as a diving board into a very steep, very deadly drop onto rocks below. How dare our county ignore something like this. They know it is there and they know it is dangerous. What happens when the kids who do frequent the area get into a fight or something? What if they start pushing and another one falls? Something should seriously be done. Oh one more thing about that photograph, back to the person who allowed the photo to be on the front page: Shame on you Sir or Maam for exploiting the face of a greiving human. The picture makes me sick and I am sure it does the same for the rest of the disgusted gazette readers through out our county.

I agree with the previous

I agree with the previous comment, this is not necessary to show these photos. The other week there was a photo of a bloody chair where a person was shot. These photos should not be put in the paper.

Nice picture, not really.

Nice picture, not really. Dont you think you could have put a picture other than the reaction of a grieving family. You should be ashamed. Everyone in the county gets to see their tormented faces on the cover of the paper.
