Edith May Snell
Edith “Edie” May Snell, a member of a pioneer Mariposa County family, died March 31. She was 77.
Edie grew up in Mariposa, graduating from Mariposa County High School in 1950. She moved to Merced and worked for the Merced Credit Bureau. She married Herbert John “Jack” Snell and had three children: Denise, Duane and Dean.
Mrs. Snell enjoyed camping and going to AMA motorcycle races to watch sons Duane and Dean race. She belonged to the Merced Dirt Riders Motorcycle Club. Edie also enjoyed playing shuffle board and darts. She sponsored a dart team, “The Chicken Hawks,” at the Airport Inn in Mt. Bullion. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her grandsons play baseball, football and race motorcycles.
Mrs. Snell was preceded in death by her paretns, Edith and Wilber Peterson; her husband, Herbert John “Jack” Snell; brother, Wilber; nephew, Chris; and grandson, Steven.
She is survived by her daughter, Denise; sons, Duane and Dean; brothers, Bill and Clair Peterson; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edie will be missed by many. A celebration of life will be held on May 1 at 1 p.m. at McKay Hall in Cathey’s Valley Park. There will be a reception following the service. The service will be officiated by Rev. John Hilton of the Gospel Defenders Church in Merced.
