Woman seriously injured in crash
A young Mariposa woman was seriously injured in a rollover accident on the Briceburg Grade in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Krystal Jones, 20, was reportedly driving westbound on Highway 140 when she lost control of a Hyundai Sante Fe, and the vehicle rolled an undetermined number of times, coming to rest on the shoulder of the highway. Jones sustained major head trauma and was flown to Memorial Hospital North in Modesto for treatment.
According to CHP officer Chris Michael, at 1:48 a.m., California Highway Patrol dispatch in Atwater received a call of an accident just east of the Bear Creek Bridge with no other details. It wasn’t until 2:08 a.m., a full 20 minutes later, that CHP dispatch received another call stating that there was a female inside the vehicle, and she was bleeding. That call prompted CHP dispatch to roll emergency medical services (EMS). However, according to Mariposa County Fire Chief Jim Wilson, CAL FIRE and Mariposa County Fire units didn’t receive a page and tone out until 2:14 a.m.
Michael said a CHP officer was on scene at 2:11 a.m., but that particular section of Highway 140 is a “dead zone” for CHP radio traffic. He noted that the original call contained no details other than a report of a vehicle accident, and that may have been to delay in dispatching EMS.
Both CHP and Mariposa County Fire are investigating the delay.
