Mariposa businessman Dieter Dubberke received the Daughters of the American Revolution Americanism Medal during a special ceremony held April 24 in Mariposa. Dubberke was honored by the Merced River Chapter of the organization.
In its recommendation, the DAR stated, “We are astonished by Mr. Dubberke’s childhood experiences in eastern Germany and impressed by his numerous accomplishment within the Mariposa community.” The letter calls Dubberke “a daily inspiration to those who strive to become an American citizen. His life epitomizes the qualities of this award: leadership, trustworthiness, service and patriotism.”
Dubberke was chosen by DAR because of his leadership in the community, including his service as a Mariposa County Fair director and Western Fairs Association’s Blue Ribbon Award recipient. He also helped sponsor the Grizzly Family Hoedown to raise more than $22,000 for athletic transportation and was named businessman of the year in 2000.
The DAR recommendation said that Dubberke “sets example for others, honors his wife and family, displays the value of hard work, common sense, and giving back to others.” He hires local people, provides generous benefits for his employees and serves the community.
Among other things, Dubberke “instills in others a sense of duty and patriotism, serves as an inspiration” and “speaks to others about the dangers of moving away from America’s founding principles,” the recommendation said.
Dubberke’s Pioneer Market has long set the standard for community service. He initiated the Sports Challenge program, contributing one percent of collected receipts to school sports and exercise programs. He sponsors the annual MCHS golf tournament, which last year raised over $25,000.
