GAZETTE PHOTO BY JILL BALLINGER Mariposa’s varsity girls’ soccer squad thumped Denair, 4-1, last Friday, following a 3-0 shutout over Delhi on Wednesday, which kept the Lady Grizzlies deadlocked

for the Southern Athletic League lead with Le Grand’s Bulldogs.

The wins boosted the MCHS league mark to 6-1-1, knotted in points with the 5-0-3 Bulldogs.

In the win over Denair, Mariposa’s Carrie Waheed crossed the ball to Malon Lasater, who’s shot careened off the defender directly back to her. She skirted the oncoming fullback and slapped the ball into the goal from 22 yards out for a 1-0 Mariposa lead.

Lasater extended the MCHS margin in the 21st minute when she dribbled past a defender and ripped a shallow shot into the net for her second goal of the match.

The Coyotes rallied for a solo score as the first half wound down, leaving Mariposa with a 2-1 bulge at the intermission.

GAZETTE PHOTO BY JILL BALLINGER In the 46th minute of the second half Mariposa goalkeeper Carrie McNally smashed her goal kick to midfield. Sophomore Katie Montgomery leaped for the header to give Mariposa control of the ball while battling a Coyote fullback. Both missed the mark, and the ball bounced toward the Denair goal. As the Coyotes’ goalkeeper raced for the loose ball, Montgomery was a step faster, and she scooped the ball underneath the outstretched goaltender for another Lady Grizzly goal and a 3-1 advantage.

From her starting slot at the left wing, Waheed put the game out of reach in the 57th minute when she outmanuevered a pair of Denair defenders and pounded her shot home for a 4-1 MCHS win.

Against Delhi, the Lady Grizzlies scored in just the second minute after Montgomery wove the ball through the midfield and hit Waheed down the left side with a per- fect pass. Waheed took one driblle then blasted the ball past the Hawks’ goalkeeper for a 1-0 Mariposa lead.

Just 12 minutes later, Montgomery dribbled past a pair of onrushing defenders and snapped the ball into the back corner of the net for another Mariposa score.

After leading 2-0 at the half, Lasater stretched the MCHS lead in the 66th minute when she smoothly played a ricochet off the Delhi goalkeeper and swept in into the net.

The Lady Grizzlies were scheduled to play Turlock Christian Wedneday afternoon before they travel to Waterford on Friday. Both are SAL contests against teams battling for the third place slot in league.
