The Mariposa County Unified School District will consider taking a loan from both the Mariposa County Office of Education and Mariposa County to get through what is anticipated to be a very difficult summer. The board of trustees will vote on the proposals at Thursday night’s regular meeting.

MCUSD Director of Business Services Linda Levesque said the loan authorizations are necessary in case things get financially strained. “We’re trying to be proactive,” she said. “This is a worst-case scenario. We’re preparing ourselves and the County if that need is there.”

In her board agenda items, she explained that the state’s continued fiscal crisis could result in new cuts for the district. Those cuts could create serious cash flow problems. If that happened, Levesque wrote, the district may not be able to make its payroll.

One resolution would authorize the district to borrow from MCOE in June. The second gives the district the opportunity to borrow from Mariposa County in September. Levesque emphasized that the need for either loan may not materialize, but the district wants to be sure it has completed the necessary steps to seek such funding if it must.

The loans are not to exceed $1 million each. They are short-term and will be paid back with interest.

Also on the board’s agenda is an item in closed session that could appoint a permanent superintendent. Aaron Rosander was appointed as acting superintendent last month, and the district decided to stop the search for a permanent replacement.

The board meets in open session on Thursday evening at 6:25 p.m. at the district office board room.
