'Green Gold' is subject of history talk

"Green Gold" is the subject of the April history talk at the Mariposa Museum and History Center on Sunday April 11, at 2 p.m. Beverly Backer, cochairman of exhibits at Fresno Flats Historical Park, will tell stories of miners, cowboys and lumberjacks, recounting the history of Fresno Flats and the logging industry.

At a time when surrounding towns were filled with men seeking gold, Fresno Flats was prospering as a community of families finding their fortunes in cattle, crops and lumber.

At the end of the Civil War the town, later renamed Oakhurst, attracted more settlers seeking to build a new life. The settlement grew to include a large hotel, a saloon and a busy stage stop with a livery stable in the 1890's. The historical park has restored homes, a jail, a blacksmith shop, schoolhouse and other buildings and artifacts reflecting the everyday life of the early residents.

Backer, who has been sharing her historical knowledge with community groups and park visitors for the past 15 years, has played a big part in getting children involved with history with the “hands on" tours she developed for third graders and others. She will show historical photos, time lines and maps to illustrate her talk.

This is the third of this year's museum-sponsored series of entertaining talks about local history. There is no admission charge. Refreshments will be served. The Mariposa Museum and History Center is located at 5119 Jessie Street in Mariposa. For more information contact the museum at 966- 2924.
