Community value
BY DAN TUCKER GAZETTE PUBLISHER

Last week, there were two front page crime stories about events that took place in Mariposa County. One detailed an alleged crime against nature involving a wild turkey that was hung from a tree. The other discussed charges brought against a local business operator who failed to provide the services and equipment he was paid for.

Before the ink was even dry Thursday morning, a juvenile and his parent contacted law enforcement officials to admit to his actions. Just a couple of hours later, the district attorney’s office contacted the GAZETTE to report that other victims of the businessman had come forward after reading the story.

These are two perfect examples of the service, reliability and relevance a community newspaper provides to its readers.

We are proud of the relationships with local officials and law enforcement that have taken years to foster and reinforce.

Honestly maybe its a good

Honestly maybe its a good thing if theres a subway, seeing how all the high school students eat not so healthy food. Most likely doubled there weight in the past few years maybe getting something like that is what they need during lunch or when they are with fellow school mates? Also it would provide a few more jobs for locals who are struggling.

I have been reading all the

I have been reading all the squabbling going on about Subway wanting to open a shop in Mariposa. There are various arguments against it. One of the arguments is that we should not have chains in Mariposa. Boy, are you late on that one: Texaco is a chain; Chevron is a chain; Shell is a chain; H & R Block is a chain; Best Western is a chain; Holiday Inn is a chain; Comfort Inn is a chain; Yosemite Bank is a chain; what is now Happy Burger used to be an A & W - that was a chain; Burger King is a chain; Papa Taco wanted to be a chain, but failed; RiteAid is a chain; what is now Savories used to be a Rexall Drug Store - that was a chain; NAPA Auto Parts is a chain; True Value Hardware is a chain; 49er Super Market is a Big T Super Market - that is a chain; Pizza Factory is a chain; what is now Westamerica Bank (which is a chain) was a County Bank (which was a chain) and before that was a Bank of America (which is a chain). I have probably missed some. Another argument I have heard is that they will not be buying all their supplies locally. How many eating establishments in Mariposa only buy their supplies locally????? From what I understand of the current plan they would be going into an already established shop that is currently empty. Personally I have no more objection to having a Subway open up then I have had whenever any other in the long line of eating establishments have openned up in Mariposa.
