ICES marks special occassion
This year the Week of the Young Child runs from April 11 through 17 and is held in celebration of young children, and to thank all those who make a difference in their lives. The theme for 2010 is “Early Years are Learning Years.”
Sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. It is a time to do the best to ensure that every child experiences the type of early environment – at home, at child care, at school, and in the community – that will promote learning. NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that early childhood is vital to the community. Children need a strong learning foundation to succeed in school, and in later life.
It is a time for the community, state, and nation to plan how to better meet the needs of all young children and their families. Residents can make a difference in the community by reaching out and thanking parents, teachers, coaches, caregivers, librarians, youth leaders, and all adults who help young children. Infant/Child Enrichment Services (ICES) urges support of early literacy programs as early reading skills that are crucial for young children as part of their school readiness.
ICES advocates a comprehensive effort to improve the quality of early childhood education by offering classes to child care providers and educators in the areas of health and safety, and trainings in developmental activities for literacy and learning. Anyone who would like information on child care in their area, financial assistance for child care, or how to become a child care provider, call ICES at 966-4474.
