IN TWO GAMES LAST WEEK, WAHEED CHALKED UP 5 GOALS TO PACE MCHS. GAZETTE PHOTO BY DAN TUCKER In their last two Southern Athletic League varsity soccer contests, Carrie Waheed’s ability to find the net has paced the Lady Grizzlies to a pair of win that keep them tied for the SAL lead with Le Grand.

Last Friday, Mariposa dispatched Waterford’s Wildcats, 4-2.

Early in the match, in the third minute, Malon Lasater punch a ball over Waterford defenders to Katie Montgomery, who quickly gained control, beat the sweeper and fired a shot past the goalkeeper into the net for a 1-0 MCHS lead.

Just four minutes later, Waheed collected a feed from Montgomery, dribbled through the defense and slammed a shot into the upper corner of the goal to put the Lady Grizzlies in front, 2-0, which held to the intermission.

In the 71st minute, Waheed took the ball down the left side of the field, dribbled around two defenders and ripped a scoring shot from the top of the penalty box into the corner of the goal to give Mariposa a commanding 3-0 bulge.

Three minutes later Alyssa Sharp smacked a goal shot that bounced off the bottom of the upper bar. The Waterford goalkeeper couldn’t control the ball in the crowd, and Mariposa’s Jocelyn Barrington punched the loose ball into the goal for a 4-0 lead.

The Wildcats would score a pair of goals late in the contest on a free kick and a corner kick and bent the corner to make the final score, 4-2.

Last Wednesday, Waheed recorded a hat trick in leading Mariposa to a 4- 1 SAL win over Turlock Christian on the Eagles’ home field.

In the 13th minute, Lasater floated a free kick toward the goal, and Waheed headed it into the net for the Lady Grizzlies first score, 1-0.

Mariposa pushed its edge to 2-0 in the 18th minute when Waheed centered the ball to Montgomery who fired it home.

In the last minute of the half, Turlock Christian got on the board with a long, outside shot to close the gap to 2-1.

In the 55th minute, Waheed dribbled down the left side, sidestepped a pair of defenders and ripped a shot past the goalkeeper for a 3-1 Mariposa lead. Nine minutes later, she completed the same feat when her shot ricocheted off the goalkeeper straight back to Waheed, who punched the rebound into the net for her third goal of the game.

The Lady Grizzlies are now 4-1 in SAL play, tied in points for the league lead with Le Grand, which owns the tie-breaker. Delhi and Waterford are deadlocked in third place at 2-2-1, and Turlock Christian holds a 2-3 mark. Denair is in the cellar with a 0-5 record.

The Lady Grizzlies were scheduled to travel to Le Grand for a rematch Wednesday afternoon.
