Softball squad splits

Following last week’s Southern Athletic League softball action, Mariposa’s Lady Grizzlies are even at 3-3 in league play.
Last Friday they were blanked by Waterford, 6-0, and collected just a pair of hits. On Wednesday, Mariposa spanked Turlock Christian, 6- 2, on the Eagles’ home field.
Against Waterford, 11 Lady Grizzlies were victims of strikeouts. Only Calee Peracca and Nichole Johnson were able to register safe hits. The Wildcats plated 1 run in the top of the first inning, added 1 in the sixth, and iced the contest with 4 runs in the seventh.
Johnson took the loss on the mound for Mariposa, but chalked up 8 strikeouts and gave up an unusual 5 free passes.
Earlier it the week at Turlock Christian it was a different outcome.
The Eagles bounced out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, plating 2 runs off an error, a stolen base, a double and a one-bagger.
The Lady Grizzlies closed the margin with a solo run in the top of the second inning. Ella Rose Thorpe and Brook Barrett both reached safely on a pair of walks. Brooke Earling stroked a single to pushed Thorpe over the plate and cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1.
Mariposa knotted the contest in the top of the third when Riyn Williams singled, and Barrett followed with a one-bagger. Again, Earling lined an RBI single to plate Williams.
The Lady Grizzlies pushed the game out of reach with 4 runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Courtney Dayhoff led off with a free pass, and Dylan Marchetti followed suit. Carissa Leonard singled to load the bases, and Peracca’s one-bagger pushed Dayhoff over the plate.
Haley Guenthart hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Leonard, and Williams followed with a 2 RBI single, scoring Peracca and Guenthart to put Mariposa in front, 6-2.
Johnson picked up the pitching win, recording 7 strikeouts and not yielding a walk.
