Technique’s owner jailed

Hull pleads guilty to two felonies
BY JILL BALLINGER GAZETTE EDITOR

MATT HULL MATT HULL The owner of the now-defunct Technique Computers in Mariposa has been arrested and charged with embezzlement. Matt Hull, 31, of Mariposa was arrested on March 24. On Tuesday morning, he pleaded no contest to both counts.

District Attorney Bob Brown said there was no plea deal, other than the fact that his office would not seek state prison time. “This is a local time case,” Bro-wn told visiting Judge Carlos Baker. Hull could serve up to one year in county jail. Hull could have faced up to three years, eight months in prison on the charges.

Defense attorney James Lindstedt asked for an expeditious probation report. Brown said Hull has an out of state job offer, which probation would verify. “It would be a factor that would be considered,” Brown said of Hull’s sentencing. Still, he said, there were “no promises” from the prosecution.

The arrest followed months of investigation into the aftermath of Hull’s business failing. Dozens of people have contacted the sheriff’s office since the business abruptly closed its doors. Now, two victims are part of what has become a criminal case.

Hull has been under investigation since his store closed over a month ago. The criminal case involves an individual and the local chapter of the American Red Cross. It alleges that Hull took money up front for media and computer equipment and never delivered.

The Red Cross is out $500 for a projector Hull promised to order. The second victim reportedly paid Hull more than $7,000 in advance for a computer system including two lap tops and a server.

According to the sheriff’s report, the Red Cross had placed an order with Hull for a projector in October, 2009. Someone had donated the money to the organization for the equipment.

Several weeks after the Red Cross issued the check to Hull, a local representative began asking the whereabouts of the projector. Hull reportedly had numerous stories about UPS not dropping it off and it being stolen from his personal vehicle.

The person dealing with Hull in Mariposa said he asked him at least 50 times about the projector, but never got a straight answer and never got his projector.

The second victim allegedly paid Hull $7,000 in September, 2009, as a deposit on a computer system that ultimately cost $8,687. Hull promised the system to the customer by Nov. 1, 2009. He reportedly told the victim he had been sick and promised it by Christmas.

Christmas came and went and the victim tried again and again to reach Hull. Technique also had a computer of the victim’s to be repaired. In the end, Hull took about $4,000 from the victim in goods and services.

The sheriff’s office contacted Hull about the computer that had not been returned and the computer server that had never been delivered. Hull told the deputy that he “is working with Dell computers to get reimbursed for the cost of the lap tops.”

Hull gave the deputy the server, but said he was in the process of uploading all the updates on the other computer. He said he would take it to the victim the following morning. The time came and went, and again the computer was not delivered.

On March 24, Hull contacted the sheriff’s office to say his wife was unable to drop off the computer. He promised to bring it to the sheriff’s office later that afternoon. When he didn’t, deputies went to his home to arrest him.

Hull is charged with two felony counts of embezzlement, and remains in custody at the Mariposa County Jail on $50,000 bail, which was increased at a brief court hearing on Monday. He will remain in custody until his April 13 sentencing date.

Brown said Hull likely has many other victims beyond the dozens his office has been in contact with. “He was entrusted with the money of another,” Brown said. “He converted that for his own use.” The district attorney added three more victims to the list of those who might be eligible for restitution.

Hull faced a charge of misdemeanor theft in Clovis after he allegedly stole some computers from his employer and sold them on eBay. The police report about the case indicates Hull admitted the crime, but prosecutors did not follow through on the charges.

I dont understand why anyone

I dont understand why anyone would feel sorry for his wife. She was the in on all of it. She spent the money. She should be behind bars too. Matt Hull was just lazy. He spent the money and didn't work. Both he and his wife should be put away for a long time.

I don't know why either & now

I don't know why either & now that I have heard about this, I think there will be more charges added as we are victims of his lies as well. We dealt w/ him & his wife for many months trying to get our comp back not to mention deals of lap tops he had offered, not returning calls, not showing up, until we went to his home, why he was convientely out of town, but his assistant became very cooperative, as our comp was returned however much of the programs were lost and it still does not work after 2 yrs. I hope they both rot in jail. What a creep & this pick of him proves what an evil person he is.

just some food for thought

just some food for thought before you all continue to drag his name through the mud... no one is perfect. He has a wife and 4 beautiful children. That alone would put a delay on 1 computer getting worked on, let alone however many were being probably shoved down his throat. I'm not saying it was very "businessman" of him to put his family first, but he didn't steal.

Oh yes he did steal. My

Oh yes he did steal. My husband & I went through this same issue w/ Hull & his wife for months. we suspected something was not right. We got the same offer regarding a lap top but he gave us the run around as well while keeping our comp in his possession, until I retrieved it back myself. Not to mention they have no idea what they are doing, our comp till this day is still messed up. It's irrelevant whether he has kids or not, he should not have put them through all these lies and thievery. His wife is just as guilty, she new what was going on. Looks like further charges are now going to be added..They deserve everything that's comin to them. Please take your blinders off.

After the county wide power

After the county wide power outage there were many of us standing in line waiting and waiting and waiting for the Techniques store to open for business with our pc's and lap tops in hand. After repeated inquiries to the status of our pc which they had for over a week, I was given no definate answers as to repair time or cost. I was told a different story on each inquiry. I went with the advice of several friends, one of which was coming out of the store said, "They have lost my computer, and it has been lost for quit some time, and it doesn't look good." Ithought to myself, "How does a business loose a computer" They don't and knew then that that something was not right with this business. I immediately went back in the store got my pc and went to Oakhurst Computers. By that evening I had a status report and a quote on the the cost for repair. I was even given a better power unit at the price orginally quoted. The next afternoon I picked up my repaired pc from Oakhurst Computer and I am very glad I did not do any business with Technique.

My husband are victims as

My husband are victims as well. The same scenario happened with us & we just found out about this a couple days ago from Happy Burger. Our comp programs were lost & it is still messed up after 2 yrs. He had our comp for months. Well looks like we will be adding more charges. I heard his wife is in jail as well. Hope they both rot

Some two years ago I

Some two years ago I entrusted my computer to this sorry hack because it would not boot up. Again and again, I called, went in there and after two months nothing. A third month later I went in and DEMANDED he give me my computer back. He dug around and handed me my hard drive. JUST the hard drive. I asked him where the rest of my computer was and he had no answers for me. Now, I'm not even sure it's MY hard drive. He may have just gave me one to get me off his back. Now I am taking it in to see if it's really even mine. On that note, I had all my personal information on that computer. SS, drivers, bank account number's. Is this hack gonna take mine and who ever else trusted him take a job in another state so he can hack all our accounts. I pray NOT. I want that new Subway in his old place of business. I would buy one and eat it with pleasure hoping he never see's the outside again. Shame on you Matt. You are scum.

I strongly agree w/ you, we

I strongly agree w/ you, we had the same thing happen w/ my husband & I two years ago, until we finally found out where he lived and went there, at which time he was out of town, but his assistant got caught up in the middle of it & needless to say we got our comp back, however it still has major problems. Matt is scum along w/ his wife, hope they see bars for a long time, what Thief..Rot in hell Matt. And he said they were Christian, hahaha more like the devils.

I agree with the previous

I agree with the previous person; Matt had the skills, but not the business saavy. It sounds like he dug a deeper and deeper hole that was increasingly hard to get out of. I hope things work out for him and his family. This must be hard on his wife and kids, especially in our small community where this type of thing is big news.

His wife was involved. I do

His wife was involved. I do feel sorry for the kids, very sad. Not setting a very good example as a parent. However I disagree he did not have the skills, he had no idea what he was doing accept ripping people off, we are victims of his act & our comp is still messed up after two years. I don't feel sorry for his wife at all she was spending the money. What disgraceful people.

From my interactions with

From my interactions with Technique, I have to think this is more about general business incompetence rather than deliberate attempt to defraud anyone. Matt & team had great technical skills, but organizationally were not nearly as adept. Still, I understand the anger of those who pre-paid and didn't get the promised computers. I hope this works out for everyone, somehow.

We will pray for you. And

We will pray for you. And your sweet family.

I've heard many stories about

I've heard many stories about their business taking forever for simple jobs (memory upgrades, virus removal, etc.), it's a shame this all happened. He had a good thing going. There are still good local repair teams in Mariposa available, though.
