Touch-screen kiosk provides answers

Want to know what pesky bug is chewing holes in the tomato plants? Find out by using the touch-screen pest management kiosk currently on display at the Mariposa County Library.

From aphids to gophers, users can find information about 60 common home and garden pests, including identification and management, alternatives to pesticides and least-toxic pest control, as well as safe use and disposal of pesticides. The kiosk also includes tips related to proper watering, fertilizing and avoiding problems associated with garden chemicals.

The kiosks are part of the statewide University of California (UC) Master Gardener program public outreach. The Mariposa County Master Gardeners will have a kiosk for use in Mariposa County and Merced through Sept. 15. During that time the kiosk will be displayed at the county libraries, the Merced County Fair and the Mariposa County Fair in September.

The kiosks were designed by the Healthy Garden/Healthy Home project of San Diego County and the UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program to help consumers solve pest problems while protecting the environment, their health and preventing runoff from residential landscapes.

Mariposa County Master Gardeners are available to answer home gardening questions in person at the UCCE office every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. Home gardeners are invited to come by the office located at 5509 Fairgrounds Road, or call 966- 2417. Inquiries may also be made by email to mgmariposa@ ucdavis.edu.

The North County satellite office, at Village Realty, 6430 Greeley Hill Road in Greeley Hill serves the communities of Greeley Hill, Coulterville and Don Pedro. It is staffed on Saturdays from May through October, and by appointment. Residents of these communities may call 878-3209 for information or direct inquiries to the email address noted above.
