Thomas J. Shandorf
Tom Shandorf of Mariposa was born Sept. 16, 1936, in St. Paul, Minn. He passed away Feb. 26 at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Fresno.
Tom moved with his family to Long Beach in 1947. He graduated from St. Anthony’s High School and Long Beach State College, majoring in English and journalism. In 1958, as a student he interviewed Elinor Roosevelt.
Tom served in the United States Army and taught English while stationed in Puerto Rico. After the Army, he worked for Technicolor Corporation and Catalina Swimwear. He moved to the Mariposa area in 1972, working in construction and then co-owning a sawmill operation. In the late 70s, he acquired a real estate license and worked in that profession as a salesman, and later as the owner of Daily and Co. until his retirement.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying many hours on Lake McClure. Another activity that Tom enjoyed was acting. He performed in numerous melodramas at the Golden Chain Theater in Oakhurst.
He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and Gerry Fuller and Jeanie and Gene Van Tassel; niece, Cindy Dale of Mariposa; nephew, Kevin Kleinsmith of Mariposa; and numerous nieces and nephews in Southern California. He was preceded in death by his father, Day; his mother, Helen; and his brother, Richard. Tom will be missed by his family and many friends and business associates in the Mariposa area.
A memorial service will be conducted at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mariposa on Saturday, March 13 at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the church hall. Interment will be at a later date in Long Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his name.
