Officials at Mariposa Middle School and the Mariposa County District Attorney’s Office are warning residents about two possible phone scams.

The first, reported by MMS Principal Dr. Bill Atwood, is an apparent attempt to collect money for advertising, purportedly on behalf of the school. Atwood said his school is not contacting anyone to solicit such advertising dollars. Any calls indicating such should be considered fraudulent.

The second scam is a take off a popular internet scam in which a person is asked to send a check for a specific amount and is then promised to received millions. District Attorney Bob Brown said at least one resident has received this call.

He warned citizens against calling numbers that have an 809, 284 or 876 area code. These codes, based in Jamaica, could result in thousands of dollars of phone charges.
