Henny Newport

Long-time Mariposa resident, Henny Newport, passed away on Feb. 4, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 75.

Henny was born in Holland and in her early 20’s immigrated to the United States. Although she was very proud of her U.S. citizenship, she would root for the Dutch Olympic Team. Her children and grandchildren will continue the tradition as the Dutch skaters take to the olympic ice in a few weeks.

Henny was known for her artistry and was very accomplished in needle point, knitting, and quilting. Family Christmas gifts were usually hand crafted. She entered her craft pieces in the Mariposa County Fair, and received many ribbons. She was also an amazing gardener, she could grow anything. Her yard was immaculate, and much to her husband’s chagrin, there was never a leaf out of place.

Henny is survived by her husband of 35 years, Ed Newport. She is also survived by her son Jeff Huizen and his wife Tammy; daughter Shirley Huizen; daughter, Cindy O’Bannon and her husband Russ; step-daughter, Kimberly Green and her husband Joe; step-daughter, Tamara Wass and her husband Eric. She is also survived my numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at the Mariposa Cemetery on Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to hospice.
